A warm afternoon that became the rest of their lives.
I
Riverside — The Peaches
It started on a warm afternoon in downtown Riverside. Eddie arrived first — early, the way you are when something actually matters — and stood outside a little coffee shop, watching the street.
Then he saw her. Bridget was walking toward him, unhurried and bright-eyed, a little late and not at all sorry about it, holding out a brown paper bag like a peace offering. Inside: a handful of peaches she had picked herself that morning.
He did not know it yet, but that was her — showing up with something no one else would think to bring.
II
The Coffee
They went inside and ordered. Before Eddie could take his first sip, Bridget had already leaned over and tried his. She handed it back without a word — just a smile.
And somehow, in that small, easy moment, the nervousness of a first date dissolved entirely. They talked the way you talk when you stop trying to impress someone and start just enjoying them.
III
Westward to Laguna
At some point, without much discussion, they decided the day was not over. They got in the car and drove west — windows down, music low — all the way to Laguna Beach.
They had brunch on a rooftop with the ocean stretched out in front of them, the salt air drifting in between every sentence. Time stopped being something either of them was keeping track of.
IV
The Shoreline
After brunch, they walked down to the sand. Bridget wanted to get in the water. Eddie was not convinced. She made her case enthusiastically, gesturing at the waves, pointing out how perfect the day was. He smiled and held his ground.
They walked the shoreline instead — barefoot, unhurried, the kind of walk where the conversation never quite stops — until they spotted a row of e-bikes waiting along the coast path. They rented two and spent the rest of the afternoon riding up and down the shore, laughing, racing, stopping when something caught their eye.
V
Sunset Over the Pacific
When the light began to change and the sky softened into shades of amber and rose, they made one last stop — Trader Joe’s. They wandered the aisles, picking out things at random: cheese, crackers, fruit, something sweet.
Then they drove to a park perched above the water, spread out a blanket, and sat together as the sun made its slow descent into the Pacific. They watched it go all the way down. Neither of them rushed home.
And in the quiet that followed — with the last light fading and the city beginning to glow below — it was already understood, without either of them having to say it. This was not just a good first date.
